Behind the Scene: "Nature's Fortress"
This image was a gift.
When I go to places like Bryce Canyon, I typically go to both be with friends and family, and also to capture photographs. But within a visit, those two things are somewhat separate. I do not usually like to have people around me when I am being serious about my photography. And on the flip side, I do not like to take a lot of time photographing when I am trying to be present with others.
This was a "be present" occasion, so I was mindful of just being in the moment with my daughter. We were hiking and enjoying our time together, so I was not primarily concentrating on photography. Also, it had been very overcast that day, and I was not expecting any of the beautiful afternoon light that makes images so magical.
But then, suddenly, there it was! The setting sun broke through the clouds and illuminated the scene just long enough for me to capture a few amazing shots. And since I don't hike without having my camera handy, I was ready. :)
